The discussion centers around UM's annual Indian Law Week, which runs an entire week each April. The clinic highlights 'hot topics' in Indian country and brings in panel discussions on Indian Education For All, Montana State Superintendent Denise Juneau's Native American education program. Description: Elrae Potts and Roger White Jr. of AlterNATIVE come on the show to discuss tobacco education along with Trace Wellman, Blackfeet Junior Powwow Princess. Potts and White have been doing work on Indian health and tobacco prevention in Missoula with the Montana Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council. Jodi also asks them about their work with youth, including a meeting of over 90 Native youth they called a GONA, or Gathering of Native Americans.

Description: Dr. Arne Vainio is an Ojibwe physician who works on the Fond du Lac Reservation in northern Minnesota. He joins Jodi here to discuss his work in Native American health, but also tells the story of how his trajectory in life changed as he began to come into adulthood on the reservation. Soft spoken and serene, his stories of alcoholism, suicide and tragedy bring perspective to the conditions Indians face on reservations today. Tribal Scene Radio Episode 1

Description: In March of 2009, Native American music and news were scarecely heard on the radio in western Montana. This likely prompted Gary Farmer and journalist Jodi Rave to make this youtube video when he visited the University of Montana campus. The staff at KBGA (the college radio station for UM) was not intentionally denying access to Native Americans; the two parties had simply not communicated up to that point! Needless to say, better communication led to what has become a fantastic collaboration between Jodi and the KBGA staff. Since then, Tribal Scene Radio has covered an impressive number of topics in Indian country, including this first interview in which Jodi clears up any misconceptions about the public's access to the university radio station. Listen as Jodi speaks with media activist and actor Gary Farmer on this topic as well as his non-commercial radio and television work in the United States and Canada.

Ryan James and Julia Maes - Somewhere Along the Line

Tangled up in broken-hearted woes and such? Wallow further in the sadness with the painfully pure and serene ballads of Ryan James and Julia Maes. Bred in Ellensburg, WA, these two high school chums have been playing together for years; their complimentary voices intermix like old friends throughout these dramatically dynamic songs and are liable to conjur images of country livin', up-ended bottles and bittersweet love.

Recorded in one all-night session at House of Watts in Missoula, MT. Limited copies of this disc were distributed to friends and family in Montana, Washington and Arkansas. You can listen to tracks on Myspace (Ryan and Julia also perform under the name Sober Enough to Drive). Songs included from this recording are: Call Them Off, Coal Country, Step Right Up, Hobo Song, Cassiopeia, The History of Everybody, Git Your Boots On.

Julie & the Wolves - Free Love

Three young folks came into the studio on a Thursday morning to eat cinnamon rolls and record an EP's worth of live material with accordian, ukelele and lightly brushed drumming. Julie and the Wolves weave delightful harmonies with softly spoken lyrics ranging from le fromage to fat cats. At times, the songs truly are sublime with their golden, sunny timbre and delivery.

This disc was released during Total Fest X in Missoula, MT. No overdubs were made in the recording of Julie and the Wolves. Album art was fashioned by Derek, who also played drums. Hear select tracks from this session at Myspace. (Twenty-Six, Cheese Song, Two Fat Cats)

Lucas and Clark - Just Like 'Is Here EP

A precursor to the forthcoming Just Like 'At (an Arkansas abbrev. for Just Like That), this 5 song EP was recorded at the University of Montana music building in December of 2009. Lucas came up to Montana for a whole week of recording and what resulted is an unexpectedly elaborate set of arrangements for his country-infused repertoire.

Thanks to Charles Nichols and the incredibly generous access to the recording equipment at the University of Montana, this album sounds filled-out, warm and vibrant despite its currently unmastered state. Listen to the tracks and enjoy the free download at bandcamp.

Modality - Full Length

Modality is a synth and drums duo from Missoula, MT. This album is their first official release, recorded at the University of Montana music building (primarily) in a one night session. The music on Full Length is instrumental and widely varied; pulsating rhythms, synth drones, frenzied drum fills and  blissful melodies populate the disc. Mastered at Dynamic Sound Service in Seattle, WA.

The Ann and Teresa and Ann Show

Comedy talk done like no other. One of them (T) is a professional actress, ukelele virtuoso and an instructor of the fine theatrical arts at the University of Montana; the other (A) is an interrogative force to be reckoned with, an interviewer armed with a Ph.D in Psychology and a hardline infatuation with the Indigo Girls. Due to an unevenly distributed number of syllables in their names, Ann demanded her name be mentioned twice in the title of the show, hence the 'missing' third member. Together, they are supermoms on a mission to become international radio superstars.

Topics range from motherhood to puppetry and beyond. Most shows also include a song written and performed live by Ann and Teresa, and in fact you can listen to studio arrangements of these songs here. The show also includes recurring segments like Why We Ain't Gettin' on NPR, Stephanie is a Drunk and a Liar, and the beloved Non-Profit Roundup, where representatives of Missoula's non-profit organizations pay a visit. Ann and Teresa got their start on radio at KBGA, the college radio station for the University of Montana.

Generation X: The Interviews

Randy 'Skatin' Katen is the host of Generation X: The Interviews. Since 2008, Randy has hosted his bi-monthly punk radio show on KBGA, the college radio station for the University of Montana. Over the years, he's tracked down all the legendary performers from his days in California back in the mid/late 70s and early 80s. Randy is a former pro-skater, member of the N Men, and one bad-ass gray-haired mofo.

His interviews are fast-paced and funny and often he's able to get these old punk-rockers to talk at length about the glory days, the chicks and the beer and the mayhem, and get some perspective into how they're still using their music to make a living 20, 30 or sometimes even 40 years later. Tribal Scene Radio

This is a Native American news program that originates from KBGA, the college radio station at the University of Montana in Missoula. Jodi Rave is a graduate student and 13-year veteran journalist in the Missoula valley. With 30-60 minute long-form interviews, she reports on a variety of topics across Indian country, from the Canadian Tar Sands to tobacco and alcohol use to Native American education and tribal sovereignty.

Jodi has a strong voice for Indian rights and frequently travels across the Northwest and Midwest to meet and collaborate with leaders in Native American communities. This program will educate the listener on historical aspects of these unique cultures within our own borders, and provide a first hand conversation with tribal leaders and policy makers for some of Indian country's biggest events. Together, we continue to learn about the long-term consequences of actions taken by the United States Government in the previous centuries and we examine critically the decisions and legislation that affect Native communities across this continent today.
